Better than many that cost much more, February 19, 2009
These
AKG 324's sound fantastic. The cord is thin and the phones are
extremely lightweight, but they are very durable even in an active
environment. The sensitivity is extremely high, so you can get by
without a headphone amplifier. Breaking them in changed little if
anything at all with the sound. This is after 50 hours of use.
Highs
4/5 - Great, but not perfect. Clear as a bell, but somewhat emphasized
compared to the other ranges. Instruments sound pleasantly bright and
lifelike. Not harsh or fatiguing, but they are certainly brought out
strong. High hats sing with authority on these earcanals.
Mids
4.5/5 - Are superb, but not excellent. Vocals are communicated to your
eardrum with clarity and precision. Other notes aren't left out either.
They get a chance to make themselves known with fullness, definition,
and superb separation, so that each individual instrument or sound have
their own place in this range. Details that are in this range are
pronounced, but take a slight backseat to the aforementioned highs,
which can be apparent in most rock/pop music.
Lows 5/5 -
Absolutely fantastic. Not only do you hear it, but you feel it. The bass
is tight, controlled, and surprisingly accurate for the price and it
being a hybrid earphone. It is not boomy/muddy like the Bose In-Ear
phones and it isn't anemic (at least to me) like the Shure SE-210. To me
the low notes are perfect. They also don't bleed into the other ranges,
even if you do EQ for more bass if it's insufficient for your taste.
Soundstage
4.5/5 - Downright the best I've heard yet from a canalphone. These cans
somehow surround you with music like a bank-robber that just got
caught. If you don't start dancing as soon as you hear these, it's
because you don't have limbs. The sound is immediately engaging and will
have you completely immersed into whatever genre you like.
Detail
Retrieval 4/5 - Studio monitor phones these are not, but they come
close. The Shure SE-210's slightly edge out the 324's, but not by much.
Make no mistake, the 324's can expose some low bit-rate sources naked.
You hear almost everything in the recording with ease on these AKG's,
but little is left to be desired anyway, especially since these are
portable.
Final word 5/5 - Build quality is great and sound
overall is near-balanced, non-fatiguing, and inviting. The price is
incredible, giving it that huge edge when it comes to value. They almost
sound as pristine as the Audio Technica M50's. So for the scrilla
(money), the AKG 324's deserve a perfect 5. These are the best ear canal
phones I've had, and yet they are half the price of a new PS3 game.
As
a side note, I personally have owned extensively, and connected to a
high quality Total Airhead amp (for maximum detail fetchin') these
earphones: Bose In-Ear, Shure SE-210, and the Sony MDR-EX85LP. These AKG
324's are better than the Bose in every way, especially in the clarity
department (unless you favor lack of isolation and greatly exaggerated
bass, then go for it). They trump the SE-210's in the soundstage, and
lows, but are on par with the mids. However, they lack the perfect
tonality of the 210's but carry the same precision. The 324's completely
smoke the Sony's like a cuban cigar. There isn't a single thing that
the Sony's can match on the AKG's, so I won't even discuss it.
Other
headphones that I've owned in my lifetime: Audio Technica M50, A700,
A55, ESW-7, ANC-7. Beyerdynamic DT-770 pro 80 ohm. Bose On-Ear,
Over-Ear.
Headphones that I've listened to extensively: Dr. Dre Beats. Bose Quiet Comfort 2.
AKG K 324 P (chrome) = Man, you better get some.
